First Senate Farm Bill Hearing Slated

Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) announced Tuesday a series of farm bill hearings that will examine “our most vital resource—our food supply.”

The first Senate hearing on the 2012 farm bill, titled “Maintaining Our Domestic Food Supply Through a Strong U.S. Farm Policy,” will be June 30. The House Agriculture Committee began farm bill hearings in April.

“The farm bill is one of the most important pieces of legislation Congress considers on behalf of rural America and our nation’s farmers and ranchers,” said Lincoln.

Lincoln initially planned to defer work on the 2012 farm bill until next year. But the committee must be prepared if the House committee, with its rapid start, begins writing a bill in early 2011, according to a spokeswoman.
