Peterson Plans to Begin Work Soon on 2012 Farm Bill

Rep Collin Peterson (D- Minn.)

House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson (D-Minn.) plans to begin work on the 2012 farm bill in the next few weeks, 32 months before the bill is due for completion.

Peterson and fellow Agriculture Committee member Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-Ore.) met with farmers Tuesday at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center in Aurora, Ore. At the meeting, Peterson laid out an aggressive agenda for the next farm bill that includes an overhaul of some long-standing farm programs.

“I think we have to do it or someone else will do it for us, someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing,” Peterson said. “There are a lot of people out there that don’t like the farm bill, so we’re going to take a look at it. Whether we can convince people to change, we’ll see. But we’re going to try.”
