Breaking: Ritter Won’t Seek Re-Election

Colorado Governor Bill Ritter canceled a campaign fundraiser and sent campaign staff home early on Tuesday.

AP, the Denver Post and several other news sources are reporting tonight that Gov. Bill Ritter will retire and not seek re-election as Governor of Colorado.

Details are very few as of now but there has been a press conference scheduled by Ritter’s office for 11AM tomorrow morning at the Capitol. Ritter began making calls to other prominent Colorado Democrats around 6 p.m. notifying them of his decision. Sources said his office contacted key legislators asking them to be available for an 11 a.m. press conference.

The rumor mill (in overload) is assuming that either Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper or former legislator Andrew Romanoff or both will seek the democratic nomination.

We will send out more information as it becomes available.

UPDATE: Much talk is also being devoted to speculation that former Senator and current Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar will throw his hat into the ring.
